VTAWAI2 Blind Spot Detection System

A.I. based Optical Vulnerable Road (VRU) User detection system that covers Moving Off Information System (MOIS) and Blind Spot Information System (BSIS)

Introduction

VTAWAI2 is an innovative Artificial Intelligence driver assistance and pedestrian warning system. It can monitor two cameras simultaneously and will trigger an external speaker should a pedestrian or cyclist enter a pre-set danger zone down the side of the vehicle when indicating left. It will also alert the driver via a beeper on a display mounted on the A pillar inside the cab should a Vulnerable Road User (VRU) enter the zones shown below. The 2 camera images can also be displayed on a monitor in the cab for additional driver assistance.

Cameras

The system uses two full HD 1080p or 720p ultra low lux colour cameras with night vision which can be fitted to the front and side of the cab. The front camera is fitted just below the windscreen or alternatively a camera can be fitted inside the cab at the top of the windscreen. The left camera can be fitted on the near-side front corner, or above the cab area depending on the vehicle variant.

Display Unit

The display unit (as seen on the front cover of this document) can be mounted on the left windscreen pillar, facing toward the driver. The display has a VRU LED, a left arrow, and a front arrow that all illuminate to provide information and warnings to the driver. It also contains a beeper to give audible warnings where necessary.

Monitor

Dependant on installation type, the monitor can optionally display the VRU with either a red or yellow box around them to alert the driver, depending on how close they are to the vehicle. It can show single views to the front or left, or a split screen view of both zones if there are VRUs in both at the same time.

System Activation

The system will turn on when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on and after 45 seconds it will give the message “system start-up” to inform the driver that the system is active. The system will turn off shortly after the vehicle’s ignition is switched off.
The front zone (MOIS) will be active at all speeds up to 10 km/h.
The left zone (BSIS) will be active at all speeds up to 20 km/h.

Information and Warning Signals

Information

If the park brake is applied for over 4 seconds, the vehicle is considered at rest (stationary). The audible warnings will now be muted but the system will still give visual signals intended to inform the driver about the presence of nearby VRUs close to the vehicle but not necessarily on a collision course.

Warning

When the park brake is released, the vehicle is considered to be moving or about to move off. The system will un-mute and provide both visual and audible warning signals as necessary intended to inform the driver of nearby VRUs. It will also warn the driver when the system detects an imminent collision between the vehicle and a VRU.

System Operation

Park Brake Applied

With the park brake applied, only visual alerts will be indicated to the driver so as not to cause annoyance/distraction.

If a VRU moves closer to the vehicle, the display LED arrow will change from amber to red. This is applicable to both the left and front arrow depending on the number of VRU’s detected and their location (i.e if there are hazards at the front and side of the vehicle). If a monitor is fitted, it will display the VRU with either an amber or red box around them depending on proximity. This is to inform the driver that there is a VRU close to the vehicle, but as the park brake is applied a collision is not imminent.

Should the system identify a VRU while the vehicle is indicating to turn left, the LED display and the left arrow will both flash red. If there is a monitor fitted it will show the VRU with a red box around them. As the park brake is applied a collision is not imminent, but the driver should remain aware of the hazard and not initiate any turn until it is safe to do so.

Park Brake Released

When the park brake is released, the vehicle is now considered to be moving off. The audible mute function is deactivated and the system will return back to normal with both audio and visual warnings reactivated.

If the VRU is within the amber zone, the LED display will be flashing with the relative location arrow (or both if there are hazards to the front and side of the vehicle). This will also be visible to the driver on the display monitor (if fitted), showing either or both camera images relevant to the VRU’s location. At this point there will be no audible warning.

This is a warning to the driver of a potential imminent collision. The driver should not move off until it is safe to do so.

If the park brake is released whilst a VRU is within the red zone, the LED display will turn red, the front or side arrow will flash red and the unit will emit 3 long beeps repeated. If a monitor is fitted, it will display the VRU with a red box around them. This is the main difference between releasing the park brake whilst a VRU is detected in the red zone compared to detection in the amber zone.

This is a warning to the driver of a potential imminent collision. The driver should take immediate evasive action.

Should the system identify a VRU while the vehicle is indicating to turn left, the LED display and the left arrow will both flash red, and the unit will emit 3 short beeps. If there is a monitor fitted it will show the VRU with a red box around them.

Functions Check

The system will carry out its own functions check and give the message “system start-up” when it is ready. Should a fault occur the system will give an audible message to the driver. The monitor can also display the message “camera loss” or “camera blocked” (if dirty or obstructed).

It is good practice to ensure both front and side cameras are kept clear of contaminants (snow, ice, mud etc).
